#36alive 288: Wrist Prehab and Rehab

We’ve talked about the importance of joint health on this blog before and today we are going to show you how to help out your wrists to keep them healthy with a little exercise that can be done anywhere.

I am demoing this in the video below, at first glance it may seem like I’m just moving my wrist one way in a circular motion and then the other, that is exactly what I am doing, and I bet if you did this now it would seem really easy. However, I am fairly certain that there will be a difference between what I am doing and what most people will do. The majority of people will tend to use there lower arm as well when moving around the wrist, this means that the wrist isn’t actually doing the work needed to keep the joint healthy as the arm is compensating for a lack of movement in the wrist but helping it move around. To maintain the health of the joint we need to isolate it then move it.

To do this bend your arm, pull your elbow in against the outside of your body on the same side with the forearm facing straight up. Keeping the lower arm completely still, move circle your wrist around, nice and slow, three times one way and then three times the other. Also keep your hand and fingers still, resisting the urge to move the around to help with the movement. To ensure you are doing this correctly you could place an object on your forearm, like your phone, if it starts to fall off then you are using your arm instead of the wrist.
