#36alive 278: Essential Oil Of The Month | Frankincense

Distilled from frankincense resin, this essential oil isn’t just reserved for the Thee Kings or Christmas time. The sweet, grounding aroma is perfect for Autumn, as it’s calming without being sedating, and when used in a diffuser, can give the home a sense of cosiness and stability.

Traditionally used in religious practices, meditation and medicines, frankincense can have a very noticeable effect on the mind – sending it into a state of relaxation with a touch of detachment (basically, it can make you feel a little bit ‘high’), It’s used a lot in ancient anti-inflammatory preparations, as well as incense, and burned in order to create a suitable atmosphere for contemplation and meditation.

In order to balance the physical and emotional effects of Autumn’s cold, windy and often unpredictable weather, burn frankincense in your home, or – for a very simple and quick method – tip a couple of drops into a mug of boiling water, and let the scent fill the room.
