#36alive 164: Build Foot Strength | Exercise 1

Yesterday we told you why it is so important to build a strong foundation from the feet. On a personal level I found this out the hard way by trying to run in minimal footwear before I had the required strength resulting in a problem that I felt in my knee. This persisted for the whole of last year but after spending months building up strength in my feet and ankles, I am now back running and very happy about it. So, over the course of this week we are going to share with you some foot exercises to build strength in your feet. These exercises may not look sexy on Instagram but may allow you to then go and do the sexy poses so don’t worry, you’ll get loads of likes eventually.

Exercise 1:

Keeping all other toes on the ground, lift up the big toe on its own, repeat this 10 times. You can also hold the big toe up for as long as possible in an isometric hold to help build strength. If you can’t do this don’t worry, your brain might have just forgot where your big toe is. That may sound weird but if you don’t use your toes individually why should your brain bother to remember. To fix this, you can hold all the other toes down while lifting the big toe, eventually you’ll retrain yourself so you regain control. It took me 3 weeks of doing this before I could finally lift my big toe on it’s so please persist with it. Instructional video included below.
