#36alive 132: Eat 4 Brazil Nuts To Lower Cholesterol

Could a single serving of brazil nuts a month result in a reduction LDL cholesterol? A study carried out in Brazil (of course) suggests that it could.

The study, carried out on a small group of 10 people involved the participants eating only 4 brazil nuts a month in one serving. Amazingly, nine hours after eating the nuts, LDL cholesterol levels had dropped by 20 points, this can take Statins (medication to lower cholesterol) up to four days!

If you’re impressed with that then you better take a seat or a knee for the next bit……………

LDL Cholesterol levels were then checked again 5 days later with the same reduction still present, then again 30 days later which yielded the same result!! All of this off just one serving of 4 brazil nuts!

Now I am wary of studies as they can be manipulated in all sorts of ways, but this one was not carried out by brazil nut manufacturers / suppliers so we would hope there was no ulterior motive for the study. Due to only a small control group being used then ideally a larger study would be carried out to see if the same results were found, but as this is such a cheap and healthy way to possibly reduce cholesterol, we are more than happy to share it.

Do be wary of eating too any Brazil Nuts though, these contain large amounts of selenium which could bump you over the tolerable daily amount, but 4 a month certainly isn’t going to do that. Therefore, unless you have a nut allergy, get some brazil nuts in to your diet. If you have a cholesterol reading machine (think that’s the technical name for them) then you could even try out your own little experiment, reading your levels before the brazil nuts, then again nine hours later to see if similar  results are found.
