#36alive 92: Sit Cross-Legged – ‘The Awkward Way’

We all get used to doing the same things over and over, most of the time without even realising it. It is only when we try to do something in a slightly different way that we notice how uncomfortable it may seem. It is a good idea not to rely on one certain thing over and over, and to try to do thigs a little different until they become comfortable. This can be attributed to most things in life but today we are going to focus on a ‘simple’ sitting position which is always a good way to notice this in a physical way.

We’ve all been sitting cross-legged since a young age, specifically when sitting through them long boring school assemblies. The cross-legged position should be a fairly comfortable position to be in, and for most people it is, when doing it the way we’ve always done it. The natural way for me to do this is to have my right leg closest to my body with my left on the outside. Have a little sit down now when reading this and notice the leg positions which are most natural to you………..then switch them, feels uncomfortable right? Well it shouldn’t be really, both ways should feel equally as comfortable. So for the next few weeks, every time you sit cross-legged, sit the way which feels awkward, until there is no awkward way anymore then congratulate yourself on bringing your body back in to balance slightly.

If you don’t sit cross-legged very much, get your ass off that chair and sit on the floor sometimes.
