#36alive 81: Skin-Loving Snacks

healthy-skinLast week we wrote about body brushing, and the many benefits it has, including helping maintain healthy skin.

As we shared; the skin is the body’s largest organ, it’s the first thing that shows signs of underlying issues with digestion, a build up of toxins, a diet too high in sugars or saturated fats, or hormone imbalances, and it’s also the last part of the body to receive nutrition – which is why regularly choosing foods that are nutrient dense and full of skin-loving vitamins can help keep things looking and feeling fantastic.

The following food list contains plenty of antioxidants, healthy fats, anti-inflammatories, omega 3s, prebiotics, probiotics, proteins and vitamins D, A, E, K and beta carotene (responsible for giving the skin a natural ‘glow!’). They can all help soften skin, prevent and reduce wrinkles, clear acne, help skin regain elasticity, and aid in a brighter complexion. Stock up on a few of these – as well as drinking at least 1.5 litres of water per day – and you’ll see results in no time.


  • Blueberries
  • Leafy-greensBlackberries

  • Red Cabbage
  • Cacao or good quality cocoa
  • Oregano
  • Basil
  • Turmeric
  • Almonds
  • Walnuts
  • Cashews
  • Brazil Nuts
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Nut butters like almond butter, and spreads like tahini
  • Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines
  • Healthy oils like coconut, hemp, avocado, and extra virgin olive oil
  • Leafy greens like spinach and kale
  • Carrots
  • Probiotics like kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi and live yoghurt

Skin-loving snack ideas:

Yoghurt and blueberries with walnuts

A trail mix of dark chocolate, nuts and berries

Steamed fish and greens

A salad with leafy greens, red cabbage, shredded carrot, hemp oil and seeds. Add fish for a protein and omega 3 boost!

Be sure to drink plenty of water as well as including these foods regularly!
